Superintendent Scott Menzel, who has a stated goal to disrupt and dismantle education systems, has skirted around parents' questions regarding whether or not Scottsdale Unified School District allows teachers to promote the idea that children can change their gender.
This blog post presents examples of SUSD curriculum, library books and conversations that will help parents make their own determination about Superintendent Menzel's position on pushing choose-your-own-gender ideology on minors.
SCOTTSDALE UNIFIED APPROVED CURRICULUM
Scottsdale Unified has approved AP Psychology curriculum that includes a chapter on gender. The textbook promotes the idea that "your body defines your sex; your mind defines your gender."
In 2023, the SUSD governing board approved the renewal of PebbleGo, despite parent complaints that the app was promoting false (and potentially illegal) information about random gender selection.
GENDER IDENTITY PRONOUN SURVEYS
Under Menzel's leadership, Scottsdale Unified administration has allowed teachers to survey students about their pronouns. The teachers also inquired whether the child desired for the teacher to hide the information from their parents. Ironically, at least two teachers who promoted the idea that children could pick a pronoun were English teachers. An SUSD principal confirmed that teachers who attempt to hide information from parents are "100% not in trouble."
SUPERINTENDENT SCOTT MENZEL'S PERSONAL COMMITTMENT TO GENDER IDENTITY PROPOGANDA
Superintendent Menzel has sent district-wide communication to teachers promoting the idea that his own daughters are girls because that is how they "identify."
SCOTTSDALE UNIFIED CLUBS: UNITOWN + MINITOWN
Scottsdale Unified tells parents that its Unitown Club teaches "leadership" skills, yet documents show that the club leaders are secretly pushing sexual orientation and gender identity lessons on innocent children. SUSD is installing the same club in middle schools, under the name 'Minitown."
SUSD staff told a parent that students sleep in cabins that align with their imagined gender at the Unitown overnight camp.
SCOTTSDALE UNIFIED CLUBS: GENDERS SEXUALITY ALLIANCE
Scottsdale Unified staff has defended their Genders Sexuality Clubs, which are based on curriculum from GLSEN and offered to students in SUSD middle and high schools.
In this video, Cocopah Middle School teacher Laynee Langner brags about how she helped children secretly change their names at school to align with their chosen gender. Langner is still employed by SUSD.
SCOTTSDALE UNIFIED LIBRARY BOOKS
SUSD students have access to several books promoting the idea that gender is a "social construct" vs a biological reality.
Teachers are allowed to order GLSEN Rainbow Library kits to fill their libraries or classrooms with books that promote gender selection and sexual topics to children.
SUSD's BATHROOM POLICY
The principal at SUSD's Hopi Elementary School - who believes that the purpose of education is social justice - is reported to allow children to use private spaces that align with their imagined gender. (NOTE: Superintendent Menzel also believes that the purpose of education is social justice.)
SUSD IN-CLASS PRIDE PROMOTION
SUSD teachers are allowed to display flags promoting sexual lifestyles in their classrooms.
This pride flag was displayed by a Mountainside Middle School teacher in the fall of 2023.
SUSD PURCHASES FROM COMPANIES THAT TRAIN TEACHERS IN GENDER IDEOLOGY
In 2023, SUSD launched a new parent communication tool called ParentSquare. The company offers a variety of gender identity trainings for teachers.
SUSD TEACHERS CREATED AND USED A GENDER SUPPORT PLAN
Scottsdale Unified teacher and Unitown club leader Mr. Gary Griggs has coordinated with other staff to create and use a SUSD gender support plan that aimed to hide information from parents. Mr. Griggs is still employed by SUSD.
SUSD STAFF PROMOTE GENDER IDEOLOGY ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Below are public posts made by an SUSD K-5 librarian. Both GLSEN and One-n-Ten promote affirming children's gender dysphoria, hiding information from parents, and drag shows for kids. One-n-Ten promotes legal name change clinics for 13-year-olds and chest binders for minors. We are sharing these posts to highlight the mindset of SUSD staff who are responsible for educating your children.
The SUSD principal at Pueblo Elementary School serves on the board on One-n-Ten.
SUSD STAFF ARE ALLOWED TO PROMOTE GENDER IDEOLOGY IN EMAIL SIGNATURES
Scottdale Unified allows teachers to use their email signatures for activist causes. Find more examples on our Parent Discoveries page.
PARENTS' CONCERNS ABOUT GENDER IDEOLOGY ARE IGNORED
When parents raised concerns about a pre-K aid who told 5-year-olds that she was neither a boy nor a girl, causing the young children to have fears that their gender would change, Menzel publicly accused parents of Civil Rights violations and defended the aid's right to confuse children with fantasy.
SCOTT MENZEL: NO LEGAL OBLIGATION TO TELL PARENTS
A SUSD whistleblower, Cynthia O'Brien, reported that SUSD social workers were instructed that they were NOT required to inform parents of their children's gender identity, unless the parent specifically asked. SUSD emails confirm O'Brien's claims.
